Summary: Three common reasons to get liposuction are ultimately what motivate many lipo patients. But we should remember that these are not the only reasons one will undergo a liposuction procedure. It’s important to find your own motivation if you’re interested in liposuction, as much will depend on your desired final results.
Three Common Reasons Why People Undergo Liposuction Surgery
Just when should you get liposuction? And why? Liposuction is one of those plastic surgery procedures that everyone thinks they have sorted out. And, perhaps more to the point, everyone feels like they have liposuction patients figured out. These 3 common reasons to get liposuction may have people rethinking their assumptions.
Because, really, what do you assume about liposuction patients, knowing nothing about them? The old way of thinking about lipo patients isn’t necessarily flattering: that somehow they are too lazy for exercise and want an easy weight loss solution.
The trouble is that this view of lipo patients is completely and utterly inaccurate. And yet, that’s what seems to be the predominant view among the popular media. The only way we can get that sorted, of course, is to offer a little education. If you have questions about your own liposuction procedure, you should definitely talk to your surgeon! This article is not intended to replace any medical advice you might receive. Instead, we’re just here for entertainment!
Motivation #1: Finishing a Weight Loss Journey
The biggest myth out there about liposuction is that it’s a weight loss solution. And while that might be technically true, as it does remove fat, liposuction is almost never used as a weight loss solution. (Instead, bariatric surgery is used as an overall weight loss solution). Liposuction, then, is intended to target stubborn areas of fat.
So liposuction is often used by patients as a way to finish a weight loss journey. When you lose a significant amount of weight, there may be some areas of fat that just don’t want to go.
That’s what we refer to as “stubborn areas of fat.” They’re immune to diet and exercise (essentially) and can really put a damper on a weight loss journey. If you’ve done all the hard work of losing weight and getting healthier, it can be immensely frustrating to still have to deal with that one little area of fat you can’t stand. For many, that frustration can overshadow any other accomplishments you might be proud of. That’s when liposuction is used: to complete the weight loss journey.
Motivation #2: Sculpting the Body
It’s entirely possible that you never had a significant weight loss experience. Perhaps you’ve been a pretty stable weight your entire life. That doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll be free from insecurities when it comes to the shape of your body, however. And in those cases, liposuction can help you sculpt your body the way you want it to look.
That’s because modern liposuction is an excellent means to shape your body. Liposuction does more than just remove fat. Modern techniques can sculpt and shape fat as well. So the stubborn areas of fat you have removed will blend in with the curves and contours you want to keep.
This makes liposuction particularly appealing for those who are a relatively stable weight. Indeed, most surgeons will recommend that you achieve such a stable weight before you schedule your liposuction procedure. Most surgeons recommend that patients maintain that stable weight for as long as possible in order to protect their liposuction results.
Motivation #3: Enjoying Your Youth
After pregnancy (or midlife, for that matter), the body goes through some tremendous changes. And one of the most pronounced changes is how it metabolizes fat. Of course, pregnancy isn’t the only reason this might happen. Your body changes as you age. And the way your body handles fat changes as well.
That’s why many liposuction patients actually see their surgeon because they want to look more youthful. The fat that collects as you age has certain social connotations to it (some areas of fat collection seem to be themselves a sign of aging). So removing that fat will make you appear more youthful.
Of course, all of the same rules apply. You’ll want to be a relatively stable weight. And you’ll also want to make sure that the liposuction results can be contoured to your body so they look natural. But many patients do undergo liposuction because they want to appear more youthful. And the vast majority of those patients are incredibly happy with the results.
Find Your Own Motivation
It’s important that you have your own motivation for liposuction, should you decide to undergo this procedure. That is, you should not undergo liposuction because of anyone else’s notions of how you should look or feel. There are common reasons to undergo liposuction, for sure. But the most important reason is yours.
