Summary: There are natural ways to tighten your tummy. And there are also some human-made ways to tighten your tummy. For example, tummy tuck and liposuction are two ways to contour your body that are especially useful when you are running into the limitations of what your body will do naturally.
What Are the Best Ways to Tighten Your Tummy?
Your body changes over time. You might think that’s something of an understatement. Some of these changes can, of course, be rather huge and shocking. Other transformations are slow. They take their time and you hardly notice them. Both such transformations can lead to the development of excess skin. And when that excess skin happens to form around your abdomen, you may find yourself searching for ways to tighten your tummy.
Your tummy can feel out of shape for a wide variety of reasons. Maybe it’s due to pregnancy. Perhaps it’s due to the fact that you’ve lost a little bit of weight! Any of those reasons could cause you to develop a significant amount of excess skin around your tummy. The question is: what can you do about it? What are the best ways to tighten your tummy?
What Does “Tighten” Mean?
When people talk about “tightening” an area of their body, they usually have one of three meanings:
- Eliminating unwanted excess fat
- Building muscle in the desired area
- Eliminating excess skin from the area
In some cases, “tightening” could refer to all three. So, here’s the thing: you have very little control over how your body presents in one specific area of your body. For example, if you wanted to lose weight around your belly, there’s no way to target diet and exercise to accomplish just that. If you embark on a weight loss process, your body will be in control of where the fat starts to diminish first. You simply have no control over where you lose weight first or most intensely.
The same is not necessarily true when it comes to building muscle. You can target muscle-building. If you want stronger arms, you can focus on those muscles. If you want stronger abs, you can do the same thing.
And, ultimately, there’s not a whole lot you can do about excess skin. Especially if you have a lot of excess skin. This excess skin forms mostly because your body doesn’t have a whole lot of elastin as you age. So once the skin stretches, it doesn’t bounce back like it did in your youth. This excess skin can be incredibly uncomfortable. But your body doesn’t really have a natural mechanism for getting rid of that skin.
How Do You Tighten Up Your Skin?
So if your body is only partially good at “tightening” up in a natural way, what are your remaining options? Well, you’ve still got a few. To a certain extent, a healthy lifestyle does really help. As does building muscle. The goal here is to get to something resembling a stable weight.
But if that doesn’t necessarily do the trick (at least, not to your satisfaction), you do have a couple of options:
- Liposuction: Fat can be stubborn. So no matter how much you diet or exercise, you may come across areas of fat that simply don’t go away. It won’t matter how hard you work at it. For those stubborn areas of fat, liposuction can be an excellent solution. This procedure can remove (and sculpt) fat in very specific and targeted ways.
- Tummy tuck: When it comes to tightening your abdomen, a tummy tuck is one of the most popular options. This procedure will eliminate unwanted excess skin and (in many cases) add some extra structure to the abdominal muscles. The whole effect is to make the tummy appear tighter and more youthful.
Of course, not everyone is going to want plastic surgery. There are some non invasive options that might work (such as Coolsculpting), but ultimately, you’ll want to talk to your surgeon about what options might serve your needs.
