Summary: While cosmetic surgery is something that is typically marketed towards women—and sensibly so, as they comprise a large percentage of the plastic surgery patients—there is a growing number of men who regularly elect to benefit from the youthful look of some of these procedures. Among the most popular with men is Botox.
There’s the Stereotype…
If you were to search for articles about Botox and dermal fillers on the internet, you would likely also find many pictures of women (smiling, happy, youthful women). The stereotype, of course, is that these are feminine products and feminine procedures. But the truth is that men are seeking Botox and dermal fillers, indeed seeking cosmetic procedures in general, in far greater numbers than in the past.
And There’s the Trend
For example, in 2013, roughly 363,000 men underwent Botox treatment. That may not sound like a big number, but that number is up 8% from 2010, only three years earlier. It’s true that some of this likely has to do with an increased availability and general popularity of Botox and dermal fillers (which, by the way, were up 11% in men from 2010), but there’s something else at work here too.
More Pressure to Look Good, Less Pressure to be Manly
In fact, it would seem that much of the increase stems from two cultural sources: an increased pressure on men to remain youthful, and increased acceptance of men engaging in cosmetic surgery or cosmetic procedures. And lest you think this is only an east or west coast phenomenon, it’s also true in the Midwest, at Milwaukee Plastic Surgery, where Dr. Bosbous, a Wisconsin plastic surgeon, has also noticed the uptick in male customers for Botox and other dermal fillers.
It’s Good for Everyone
There are a couple of advantages to this uptick in male patients. First and foremost, as the procedures gain in popularity, there is less pressure from outmoded views of masculinity to abstain from cosmetic and plastic. The second benefit is that, as plastic surgeons see more manly faces, they’re able to refine their practices and techniques to maximize the benefit to those faces.
At the end of the day, everyone deserves to have the face they want, and obviously men are no exception. Botox and dermal fillers provide a safe, easy, and relatively short-lived way for men to achieve a more youthful appearance, making it a great way to enter the realm of cosmetic surgery. If you like your Botox results, that is, maybe you’ll keep going, and maybe one day you’ll get a surgical facelift. But even if you don’t, at least you’ll have the youthful appearance you want for a while, giving you more confidence in your daily life.
So if you want a younger looking masculine face, talk to your cosmetic surgeon today.
